What’s Next? – My CMG Weekend

This weekend I am writing to you from Santa Ana Pueblo outside of Albuquerque, where the Color Marketing Group is meeting for their annual International Summit. Due to the election, the very foundation of trend forecasting has had a seismic shift, so this was a great place to be as we all wondered…what next?

It turned out to be the most perfect place to be for me this week, because now I can start to see beyond the seismic shift, and anchor onto a distant star by which to guide…i.e new future trends.

We have had several inspiration speakers who talk about future trends and the colors associated with those forecasts. Traditional demographics are exploding, which means that designers, business people, and even mothers and grandmothers find that the road ahead is shifting and partially obscured. But trust me, the road ahead is there, and trend-watchers are already carving a route to their goals.

Happily, one of the trends is that companies who are using the power of business as a force for good, are projected to be some of the most dynamic forces in the emerging economy. That would of course include eQuilter because we give 2% of sales to charity, and are almost to 1.4 mil donated to our list of charities.

In addition, with our partners like Mission of Love and Engineers Without Borders, we have facilitated the gathering, shipping and distributing of over 12,000 donated comfort for disaster relief, orphanages, cancer patients, and more.

We have one more of these project this year: our local CU Boulder chapter of Engineers Without Borders is going back to Nepal, and they have room for about 7 more quilts in their backpacks. They will hand carry these quilts to earthquake victims in mountaintop villages of Nepal. If you would like to send a quilt to Nepal, let us know so we can plan for the next comfort quilt project when our Nepal quota is met. We always have another group of people in need of a donated quilt.

Please drop off your donated quilts for Nepal by Dec 9, as our EWB contact will pick them up Dec 10. Thanks!

I am just about to hop in the car and drive out to a remote pueblo, to meet with a group of Navajo elders. I’ve been invited to join them at a local celebration, because of my quilt about water, that was exhibited at the UN in Geneva earlier this year.

Once again I am reminded, you just never know where quilting will take you in this big world! Next week I have a group of quilters meeting me in Canada, to photograph the polar bears.

Creative Nudge – 20 Years of Jane

dearjane

Today I am sharing a colorful quilt from the Houston Quilt Festival. This rainbow-hued quilt was one of the first things we saw when walking into the show….it was on the front of the Dear Jane exhibit and its bright colors drew our attention from a distance!

Wanda Cracknell of St. Albert, Alberta, Canada made this wonderful scrappy quilt, and it is a great illustration of why we quilt… our love of Color and Fabric. Her title “Sea of Color, Field of Flowers” says it all.

Dear Jane is a quilt movement that started with Jane Stickle’s 1863 quilt, and rocketed to stardom with Brenda Papadakis’ book Dear Jane. This exhibit celebrated 20 years her Dear Jane movement. Has it really been 20 years?!?

The original Dear Jane quilt was steeped in stories of the Civil War and the Women’s Movement at the time, but today quilters give it a contemporary twist with bright fabrics and a mixture of textures and prints.

Thanks Wanda, Brenda and Jane… your quilt makes us smile!

Daylight Savings Time comes to an end while most of us are sleeping tonight – don’t forget to turn back your clock!

Other trends: Bees, Hedgehogs, Flamingo Tropicals, Sloths, Polar Bears and Nutcrackers.

Also, that gorgeous trend of quilts made with LINEN that started in Japan, moved through the Modern Quilt movement, is now MAINSTREAM so you will see lots of gorgeous quilts with natural, solid and printed Linen/Cotton blends. Yummy!

Vincent van Gogh – Digital Panel – portraits of the Artist himself!
Encyclopedia Terrestria by Suite 1500 – Digital panels – flora & fauna engravings

An issue that is coming to the forefront at Quilt Festival in Houston – prizewinning quilts that are copies or interpretations of another artist’s work:

Quilt artists copying another artist’s painting or photograph *always* need to get permission and give credit to that original artist. Quilt artists who DO give credit to the original artist (and who DO get permission) should not be bullied online. We as a community need to set a benchmark for how these derivative quilts should be properly identified, so it is not such an explosive issue. If you are making a quilt from another artist’s work – BEWARE.

We have several videos that were filmed at Quilt Festival, and are now in production – stay tuned for more quilting inspirations!

Free Pattern – Pristine Wilderness

pristine-wilderness

This week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern features one of the most gorgeous Northwoods-themed panels we have ever carried – a Hoffman digital print with realistic detailed wildlife portraits.

These animal vignettes are set on point, alternating with Southwest-inspired pieced blocks, using the rich textures of Stonehenge Gradations.

The generous 69.5″ x 89.5″ size makes a beautiful cover for a Double/Full sized bed, or hang it on a big wall for a dramatic statement. Back it in flannel, or use wool batting for an extra snuggly quilt by the fireplace on those cold Winter nights!

… from the ‘Pristine Wilderness’ collection by Hoffman Fabrics, and
from the ‘Stonehenge Aspen Ridge’ collection by Linda Ludovico for Northcott Fabrics.

You may order the pattern as configured, or customize it to your liking with any of our over 20,000 fabrics. Just place your desired fabrics in your Wish List, and these fabrics will appear in the Fabric Selector below the pattern.
