Salsa Colors

Tonight I am writing to you from Havana, as it is our tour group’s last night in Cuba. Every time I come here I learn so many new things. We’ve had a couple heads of state visit the hotel where we are staying in Havana, and we’ve had close encounters with artists and musicians all week long. The colors and rhythms of this island nation have become deeply rooted in my heart over my 3 trips here in the last year.

Our group of intrepid travelers come from the US, UK and New Zealand! They have been extraordinarily generous, so we’ve been able to donate guitar strings, sax and clarinet reeds, sewing supplies, pain relief and other medications, art supplies, soap and cosmetics, and other things that are not readily available here due to the embargo. Our tour guide would turn down country roads and find hidden lanes with the poorest of the poor, and there our donations were dispersed, to the exuberant surprise of the rural folk living in poverty.

So please note: If you are planning to go to Cuba in the near future, bring gifts and donations for those here who have so little! US citizens have to bring cash because Americans can’t use credit cards or ATM machines. Internet coverage is sparse and slow. We stayed in a bed and breakfast in a UNESCO Heritage town, and the building used to be the Spanish Consulate during the days of the sugar empire… Such interesting extremes of contrasts.

I will spend the day flying home Sunday, with salsa music dancing in my head. To those trying to reach me by email – give me a day or two to catch up! Adios!

Creative Nudge – Hello from Cuba!

cuba

I arrived in Havana Sunday for my 3rd trip to Cuba. I keep saying it is my last trip to Cuba (before the hordes of tourists arrive) but then something always happens to make me fall in love with this island nation again.

Quilting takes me to the most unlikely places, and gives me some of the most unusual experiences! While leading this tour, we met a music professor, which led to a conversation about saxophones…and today I found myself visiting the home of a world famous Cuban saxophone player who gave me a private little concert in his home while his little dog howled along with the Mark VI sax. What an experience!

Yesterday I came across some tile tables that looked like patchwork. I’ve made a collage with the tiles, and some other iconic images from Cuba.

I am inspired by the colors and the music of Cuba, and can’t wait to come home and get into my studio while playing some of my new Cuban Jazz CDs. These musicians are so incredibly passionate and expressive in their art, and it inspires me to find that same passion in my own creative work.

Harvest Moon & Fall Equinox

This weekend we can enjoy several nights of a Harvest Full Moon, (large red or orange moon rising around sunset) and then the Fall Equinox comes on Thursday Sept 22. The Equinox is the official start of Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, and here in Boulder we already have leaves starting to turn.

For many of us, it is an energizing time of year, with the kids back in school, and the heat of summer subsiding. It is a great time to clean out a studio, reorganize a stash, and update our color palette and supplies.

It is also a great time of year to plan for new projects, and think about setting goals for 2017. Is this the year you will learn a new technique? Enter a quilt in a contest? Upgrade your sewing machine? Go to a creative retreat?

I have my list of quilt projects tacked to the wall, along with deadlines. I am scheduling out my work, so I don’t freak out about getting it all done at once! Now is the time of year that we really get down to work on quilts for deadlines, and projects for the holidays.

While picking my tomatoes by the light of the Harvest Moon, I am thinking about using shades of red in my next project. The cycles of the seasons roll past us, creating harmony and motivation. Just spend a little time with your fabric stash, perhaps with the moonlight streaming in your window, and you’ll be dreaming of your next project too!

Creative Nudge – International Trends in Machine Stitching – Part 2

machine-stitching

Doodling, Zentangling, Adult Coloring Books… they are all part of the same trend. These days so many of us seem to be drawn to the idea of meditative doodling, making insanely intricate mandalas, and losing ourselves in the magic of coloring books drawn by others.

But wait! We can do that on a sewing machine! We can doodle and loop and scribble in multiple colors, with freemotion quilting!

Could you give yourself permission to make a large wall quilt with multiple colors of freemotion doodling?

Cecile Trentini has created a fantasmagorical tangle of stitched squiggles and scrawls, breaking most of the rules of quilting, creating a jungle maze of stitching on her Bernina sewing machine.

This collage is made up of detail shots from several of her quilts, which were shown in her own private exhibit booth, at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. Not everyone gets what it is she is doing, but actually she is mirroring the current doodling/drawing/zentangling craze… on her Bernina.

She uses Black Thread on White, Multicolor Threads on White, and White/Neutral threads on a Black background. She makes wall-hangings and huge wall banners, made up of smaller stitched panels.

Her work is fascinating. You can get lost in the intricate abstract maze of her machine-stitched meditation. I know for sure, she has a great time when she is stitching on her quilts!

Saturday I fly to Miami to meet my group of travelers, and Sunday we will hop on a charter flight to Havana. The Fall Equinox is just around the corner, and the leaves are just starting to turn here in Boulder Colorado.

this week’s 42″ x 61″ Free Quilt Pattern is an appealing tribute to North Woods

Mission of Love – A Request

My hero Kathy Price who is a tireless advocate for indigenous children around the world, is getting ready to do another airlift to help disabled children in Guatemala.

You may recall that 4 years ago I traveled with Kathy and the surgeons to photograph the cleft lip/palate repair work that Mission of Love does for free there once a year. (We have worked together for many years, including delivering quilts to Oklahoma after the big tornado in Moore.)

eQuilter is donating a large lump sum to Mission of Love on Monday, to help fund next week’s airlift.

Would you help me to surprise Kathy, and donate any amount you can spare, to help her bring food, medical and educational supplies to the Mayan children in Guatemala. She squeezes more out of a dollar than any organization I’ve ever worked with…which is why we continue to enthusiastically support her work. If you are looking to volunteer with an organization, she will gladly accept your help on a future relief trip! It will change your life.

If you wish to help, go now to missionoflove.org and click on the red letters in the top left corner – “Donate Online Now” – to donate via PayPal.

We have 120,000 subscribers – if 1000 of you give $3 each, in Kathy’s frugal hands, it will feed and bring services to thousands of children in Guatemala. Thanks for your help!

eQuilter’s charity program has raised almost 1.4 million for organizations like Doctors Without Borders, Rainforest Action Network, Ocean Conservancy, Engineers Without Borders, and Breast Cancer Research. As always, we are humbly grateful for your support of our business, so together we can truly make a difference in the world.
