The Rebirth of Remodeling

For the next few weeks my house is torn apart, with everything being moved out of the ground floor, and 20 years of artwork, furniture and “stuff” being piled up in other places.

We’ve been in our house (the birthplace of eQuilter!) for 20 years, our wood floors and carpets are a disaster, (kids, pets, etc.) so we are redoing all the floors on the ground floor.

Maybe some of you have been through this. I think it will be a little like childbirth…not as painful but lasting for several weeks. Like childbirth, I am trying not to think about it too much before it happens.

However it is an opportunity, and I am determined to make it a creative opportunity. Last year I went through this when I moved my eQuilter studio from the 2nd floor, down into a new adjacent space to the warehouse on the first floor.

I’ve been collecting books, art, etc. through many years of travel, plus all the craft items one tends to collect with three kids who have grown up in this house. So it is a trip down Memory Lane… a chance to purge…a chance to appreciate and remember special collectible items that haven’t had my individual attention for awhile…and then there’s the dust…!

Our daughter Sophie returned from 3 weeks of music camp last night, and we are celebrating her 13th birthday this weekend. As many of you know, she was abandoned at 2 days old, and lived in an orphanage until we adopted her in China when she was 8 months old. She has grown into a lovely young lady and we feel so lucky to have each other. I have 2 teenagers in the house now…until Sam moves out to go to college in August. (he got a full merit scholarship to CU’s music school here in Boulder) We are so proud of all 3 of our kids, and feel so lucky that we can celebrate this birthday with our kids and my mom. That’s what it’s all about, right? Sharing our precious time and love with those who are close to our hearts.

Creative Nudge – An Ornamental Age

nudge

Last week while I was in Vienna, I took a one day trip to Budapest because I just had to have another look at the amazing Matthias Church.

The reason I am so madly in love with this church is because the interior is completely covered with hundreds of different painted repeating patterns…from the frescoes on the walls to the spiraling designs on the stone pillars.

These painted frescoes and designs were created by the two most important historical painters of the era, Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz. They also created the beautiful stained glass windows in the church.

Following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867, Matthias Church was the scene of a grand coronation ceremony when Franz Joseph and his wife Elizabeth (also known as Empress Sisi) were crowned, and thus the Austro-Hungarian Empire was established.

On this trip I also finally made it to the Sisi Museum, which is part of the Hofburg Castle Museum complex in Vienna. It is all about Sisi who was a very popular figure, with a life full of tragedy, who was eventually assassinated.

I have a special interest in Sisi because I had a client in New York who was Sisi’ s descendant. She told me stories about her great-grandmother and years later I finally “met” Sisi when I saw her famous Winterhalter portrait.

Sisi lived in a time of great opulence, but also a time of tremendous art and design. She wore gowns that had yards and yards of exquisite fabric. She ate off handpainted plates created by imperial artisans, and decorated her knee-length hair with starry ornaments. She was a celebrity in her own time, surrounded by the rich expression of ornamental arts that flourished during her lifetime.

Every Day is a Gift

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to one of our oldest friends in the industry. I learned Friday that Vic Dadika (Sales Manager for Northcott US) died last Wednesday. My very first fabric buying appointment at my very first Quilt Market (1999) was with Vic, and he’s been a great friend and supporter of our business all these years. He was a champion for the independently-owned mom and pop quilt shops and we always had the greatest respect for his dedication to the industry. We will miss you Vic. Our deepest sympathies go out to Vic’s family and the staff at Northcott.

Sophie is attending a music camp up in Estes Park, and I’ll be going up to hear their camp orchestra concert Sunday. I attended this camp as a kid, and my music teacher was one of the founders. He’s been gone since 1980, but I still miss him when I go up there.

After months of rain, the summer heat has finally kicked in, just in time for the Summer Solstice! (Sunday June 21 at 9:39 am PDT/12:39 pm EDT) My organic veggie garden is producing lots of lettuce and cooking greens now, and my tomato plants seem to grow an inch every day in this heat. I am trying some fancy micro-greens this year too. The kids don’t quite know what to make of them, but they are fun to look at and using them as a garnish engages a different aspect of creativity.

I came back from my Vienna trip to find a beautiful stack of donated quilts for Nepal! Many thanks to those of you who have already sent quilts, and also to those of you who are gearing up to make and send quilts. Give me a chance to catch my breath and work on the details of this project, but I can tell you that we have many prospective channels for distribution so this disaster relief project is definitely ON. Those I’ve spoken to who are on the ground in Nepal say that the quilts will be greatly appreciated as winter approaches, so we are planning for an early Fall deadline. Stay tuned for details and thanks for your patience. Feel free to drop off or ship quilts to our offices in Boulder.

eQuilter has collected and distributed over 10,000 donated quilts (with partners such as Mission of Love, and Timeless Treasures) for disaster relief since 9/11/2001. We extend our humble gratitude to the thousands of quilters who have trusted us with your precious quilts, which you have given so freely to those in need.

Lets do it again… for the families and children of Nepal. Thank you.

Creative Nudge – Pastel Confections

nudge

Travel can bring us some of the most exciting inspirations for our creative work, and museums are often the fountainhead for a whole series of works that are inspired by another era.

Knowing how many of you love to work with floral fabrics, particularly images of lush full-blown roses, I wanted to share these couple images from the Silver Collection Museum at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. (with a collage of eQuilter florals)

Vienna is a city full of discreet pastels, often outlined in gold metallic. Buildings, furniture, porcelain and desserts are in varying shades of blush pink, banana yellow, aqua and mint…trimmed in ivory and gold metallic. In these 2 images, a set of sugar pots, and a lace-edge plate have a color story of a Robins Egg Blue with gold metallic, accented with hand-painted flowers. I was so charmed by this set of floral porcelain confections!

Everywhere I go, I find my quilter friends. Tonight Vienna publisher Gabi Maier and her daughter very graciously took us for a tour of the new modern architecture of WU, out for a drive around the Vienna Woods, up to see the view from Kahlenberg, and then we had a locally produced dinner at a delightful hidden Heurigen (farmers’ wine tavern) in Nussdorf.

The mass transit system here is amazing, and in fact we were able to hop on a hillside tram right in front of the Heurigen, and take it all the way back into the city just a couple blocks from our hotel…with memories of wild berry strudel dancing in our heads!

Danube Blues or Strauss March?

This week I am writing to you from the musical city of Vienna in Austria. After saving up United points and hotel points all year, (free tickets! Whoo-hoo!) we are on a musical tour to celebrate Sam’s scholarship to music school! However we’ve had a sad start to our trip…Sam came down with a terrible viral infection and has been in bed sick for the first 2 days of our 6 day trip. So if you’d like to send him some healing prayers, the poor kid could use some help. What a bummer. Here’s hoping the Danube Blues transform into Radetsky’s March by tomorrow!

I’ve had to rearrange our plans so hopefully he can still get to see some of the highlights of the city early next week before we fly home. Mason and I managed to attend a Vienna Symphoniker concert at MusikVerein last night, and today we toured the State Opera House. We’re going to meet up with a Viennese Facebook quilter friend Tuesday too!

So in travel, as in life, the best laid plans sometimes have to be flexible. Darn it!

I am fascinated by all the articles these days about how to be more creative. They say to make yourself sleep deprived, exercise more, have empty space in your life and get bored, go out in Nature more, etc.

Quilters usually don’t have that problem, do they? They just build up an *awesome* stash (with a little help from eQuilter – *wink*) and then just go play with their fabrics, and Voila! Creativity strikes! The sewing machine beckons!

Now if you have a totally *awesome* stash, and then you get sleep deprived, I wonder what would happen? Personally I like to get a really good night’s sleep and then go rearrange my studio, and then the magic happens.

How about you?
