Creative Nudge – Vagabond Quilters

"Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost." – Tolkien

One of the things we quilters love to do is travel!

We love to travel to quilt festivals to take classes, see the award-winning quilts, and meet fellow quilt-a-holics.

We love to travel to collect textiles and crafts from other cultures.

We love to travel to take photos that might inspire a future quilt.

We love to travel so we have an excuse for handwork.

We love to travel with other quilters so we can drink wine and eat chocolate and buy fabric without feeling guilty.

But mostly…. we love to travel because wherever we go… we meet others who are all part of the big worldwide club of People Who Love to Sew.

Where are you traveling next?

* The collage above is made from several fabrics at eQuilter, but the map photo in the center is from the Doctors Without Borders offices in New York. (Pins represent where DWB physicians are working overseas.) *

Creative Nudge – For the Love of Morris

EdwardBurneJones_550

I've had a crush on William Morris since I was a girl, but it took a long time for me to realize who he was and what his designs were all about.

In the early 90's I took a trip to London, to visit an old friend. It was my first visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum, and I went crazy over the work of William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, and the Pre-Raphaelites.

The second part of the trip we drove out to the countryside, and stayed in an ancient pub in Winchester. While visiting Jane Austen's burial place in the cathedral there, I looked up and was transfixed by the stained glass windows by Burne-Jones.

Then I began a study of the Pre-Raphaelite paintings inspired by Shakespeare and Arthurian legends. Which brought me 'round to William Morris again. They all hung out together.

Fast forward to 1999, and the start of eQuilter. My very first Quilt Market in Providence RI, I stumbled onto a little company called Rose & Hubble. Some of you may still have their William Morris reproductions in your stash. I know I do! (Rose & Hubble no longer exists)

This started my obsession with all textiles and other designs by Morris and Company. Every time I go to Market, I beg the vendors to do more William Morris collections. When these reproductions are done right, Morris' original exquisite draughtsmanship shines through, and we gasp with delight. In recent years we've seen larger scale reproductions, more true to his original designs, often recolored to more contemporary tastes. I just can't get enough.

Last week while I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, for my annual pilgrimage to the new costume exhibit, I was thrilled to find a new Pre-Raphaelite exhibit. You may have seen my photos of the William Morris textiles at the Met, from my late March visit there. The new Pre-Raphaelite exhibit includes this gorgeous tapestry that was a brilliant collaboration by Burne-Jones, Morris, and others.

The image above shows a detail of this tapestry, with several of our in-stock related fabrics in a collage around the border. You can find these, and other period designs in this category, where we stock William Morris inspired designs, plus Art Nouveau, Steampunk, and Victorian collections.

Our kids have 3 more days of school before summer break – where did the year go?!?

One of the themes we really loved at Quilt Market was the Geek/Science/DNA trend, with a modern/retro twist. If you are a fan of Big Bang Theory and other science/nerdy stuff, you'll love how this category expands over the next several months!

With my background in fashion design, draping and patternmaking, I was fascinated by this year's costume exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Charles James is the designer in this year's new exhibit, which has been relocated to a new space in the museum. It is actually split between 2 spaces in the museum, which frankly is a little clunky, but we still enjoyed looking at his impeccably constructed silk confections up close. The more you know about couture construction and draping, the more you will appreciate this exhibit.

All 3 parts of our DAR Museum video tour are online now – you can find them all on our eQuilter video page. Watch for our video interview with Yvonne Porcella coming up on Tuesday.

Walking Dogs and Walking Shows

NYCFrBulldog_550

Whew! It has been a very busy week, with 3 days in Pittsburgh for Quilt Market, and 3 days in New York for Design Week.

As you may know, I lived in New York while I worked on 7th Avenue, and I really enjoy having a quick visit back to the city to check out trends, and then hit a museum or two.

One of the things you notice right away is that everybody seems to have a dog here, and dog owners all walk their pooches at the same time in the early evening. The first night I was here, I came across a group of 4 French Bulldogs and their owners who met and socialized on a street corner. A crowd gathered and stared at the dogs. Someone took a photo so I did too.

Today I walked the contemporary furniture fair, which is always inspiring and informative. I am looking for colors, shapes and textures that will give hints as to future trends in the textile industry. I also met the president of Papyrus Greeting Cards and had an interesting chat with her. One meets all kinds of fascinating creative people at these trade shows, and I like to go to presentations and get a different angle on design trends. There is a lot of innovation coming from European wall coverings!

You'll see the results of my trend and color research, over the next year. Stay tuned to our eQuilter newsletter to keep up to date on what's new, what's hot, what is trending up! I walked 2 shows for 5 days total, so I am processing a lot of color trend information this week.

Quilt Market Preview – posted May 17

I am writing to you today from the cafeteria of the Pittsburgh Conference Center, as we are attending Spring Quilt Market. It has been an exciting market, starting off with a preview copy of the Downton Abbey Sewing Magazine. (and my article on the Scottish castle right up front!) The SAQA fundraiser collection Urban Textures has had a great response, which bodes well for the long-term money-raising efforts for this international group.

The industry has grown upward and outward to the point that there is a mind-boggling amount of products and fabrics from which to choose. As I have mentioned before, I figure I look at 150,000 designs/fabrics per year, and buy about 14,000. As you are well aware, eQuilter has a particular "look" which our customers recognize. Our suppliers are always eager to show us the newest designs that fit the list of themes and topics that we buy. (Asian, batiks, large scale, contemporary, European reproduction, designer collections…etc.)

One of the categories we really dive into is metallics. Our sales reps tell us that the quilt shops don't like to stock metallics in depth, but here at eQuilter we love to buy the bling and opulence of gold and silver metallics, but increasingly over the years it also includes copper metallic, pastel pearlized, and even glitter iridescent overprints. Nothing gives a project a luxurious glow like the glimmer of these dimensional prints. Don't you agree? Yum!

We are excited to see the long lines of fans who queue up to meet young designers and millennial authors who have come into our industry over the last 2-3 years. It used to be we'd see these long lines of adoring fans for the old-timer quilt celebrities, but now we are seeing fresh new faces happily posing for Facebook photos and Instagram selfies.

As usual, we bring our unique eye for ethnic and contemporary, modern and artsy, to our 3 day marathon buying spree. What makes us most excited (and bust our budget – shhh! – don't tell Paul!) is gorgeous rich deep juicy saturated colors that defy explanation. Our greatest passion is COLOR, and we know you feel the same way.

Below you will see some quick notes on collections we've bought, that we know you'll love! Be sure to watch the eQuilter newsletter over the next several months, to see when these collections arrive. If there is something in particular that you want to snap up quickly, email Customer Service to let them know, and they can shoot out an email to you when that collection arrives.

Here is a great reason to follow eQuilter on Facebook:
All weekend we've been posting photos of quilts and fabrics from the show floor! We are posting images hourly through Sunday, so if you see something you love, make a note of the collection name or designer, and watch for it in our upcoming newsletters.

Creative Nudge – Magic Moment

CrathesDahlia_550

For most of us in the Northern Hemisphere, May signals an explosion of color and fragrance in our flower gardens, filling us with inspiration that can be translated into future floral quilts and sewing projects.

Sometimes I meet a flower that has an effect on me for years. Here is a photo of one such flower. I photographed it last August in the gardens of Crathes Castle in Scotland. It was such a perfect shade of Salmon Pink, with a few dewdrops sparkled in the morning sun…and I was smitten!

If you look closely, you will see the tinges of Mauve on the outer tips of the petals, and the glow of sunny yellow towards the center of the blossom. The more I looked at this flower, the more inspiration was revealed. Sometimes a walk in the garden is not enough. We have to stop and focus on that one perfect blossom, and as we bring our consciousness completely into that moment, the secret of the flower will show itself.

This is a type of creative meditation that brings us into an empty inner space that allows us to see things that were otherwise hidden. Allowing ourselves to slow down and just "Be" is one of the secrets of the great artists. The more you gaze quietly, the more you see.

Then we take a deep breath and dive into the process of creating!

Do you have a favorite place in Nature that opens up your creative senses?

Be sure to check out our new videos filmed at the DAR Museum in Washington DC…. 2 out of 3 are now up on our video page.
