The news of the loss of Queen Elizabeth has dominated the airwaves in the last couple days, and it is definitely the end of a very long second Elizabethan era. At 96 years old, she had a long life and long career of service, and we can only wonder at how the world has changed since she suddenly became the heir apparent when the king abdicated for Wallis. If you have been watching The Crown over these last several years, you have just a tiny inside glimpse of the Royal Family…but we will never really have known her because she was so stoic and such an enigma. All I could think of today was…now she can finally rest.

I am so happy and proud to announce that my art quilt “Women’s Rights are Human Rights” is part of the “Women’s Voices, Women’s Votes, Women’s Rights” exhibit opening at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock this weekend. It will be open through April. It was exciting to see the iconic pink suit that Secretary Hillary Clinton wore for this famous speech, is in the display case right next to my artwork. I hope that if you are in the area in the next 6 months, you will stop to see this amazing exhibit which combines textile art and a history of Women’s Rights in America. I am so honored to have been invited to create a piece for this project. Congratulations to all the other artists who are part of this presentation.

On this same page you will now see both of my art quilts in the “Inspired by our Nations Capital” exhibit and companion book. These 2 quilts (The White House, and the Folger Library Reading Room) will be in this exhibit which is premiering at the Houston Quilt Festival this year.

Next week I am traveling to the SAQA Summit in San Diego, to speak about being an artist activist and curator. This week I have a conference call with the Endangered Species Coalition about a collaboration. (After our meeting in Wash DC in July) My work always has a story, for those who are open to the stitched messages.

Perhaps you too are seeing your quilts exhibited, or you are sharing your work (finally) in person at your local guild’s Show and Tell. For those of us who kept working on our projects through the pandemic, this is a wonderful time to finally be able to share our work in person. Now we prepare for the winter sewing season, and think about our projects for 2023!

I do have ONE spot that just opened up in my Polar Bear trip next month! Call our agent Aly if you want to be spontaneous and snag that spot!

We appreciate your support of our family business, our charity program, and the opportunity to provide fabrics and services for your next project. We have received so much love and appreciation from our customers throughout these challenging years, and we want to let you know that we love you too! Big hugs!

Free Quilt Pattern – Born in Bethlehem

Prepare for the holidays with this Free Quilt Pattern that remembers the true meaning of Christmas….with the adoration of the babe in the manger on that sacred night.

To make this 56″ x 64″ quilt design, you will start with the central 36″ x 44″ Nativity panel, which features Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus, the 3 Wise Men, the Star overhead, and the peaceful scene in the stable with the animals. You will piece 4 colors of Starry Skies along with the Baby Blue Hoffman Hand-Dye, to make the Cross corners, and the sash Border.

This makes a beautiful holiday wall hanging, but also might be a deeply significant gift to a local church to be displayed on Christmas Eve. Celebrate the Prince of Peace with this inspiring image of the Holy Family.

A Fantasy Escape

“Not all those who wander are lost.” – Bilbo Baggins

Now seems to be the perfect time to escape to fantasy realms, and fortunately the new Lord of the Rings prequel series was released last week. You may also be a fan of the Game of Thrones prequel “House of the Dragon” but I think I am going to stick with the “Rings of Power”. (Less blood.) The LOTR sets, costumes are all so gorgeous and wonderfully creative. The casting is excellent, so I am along for the ride. Fav character so far – Arondir.

In fact, I have a strong theory about the stranger is who fell from the sky. My theory is at the bottom of this newsletter – Spoiler Alert! – Don’t look until you watch the first 2 episodes.

Like many of you, I am a Sci-Fi / Fantasy Nerd. I mean, when I went to New Zealand I went on 3 LOTR tours and visited the Peter Jackson WETA studio workshop in Wellington where you could see the Elves’ costumes and the silicone Troll feet and hands. Remember the scene where the hobbits are hiding under a tree root as the Ringwraith’s horse stamped impatiently on the path above? Yeah, I hiked up there and stuck my head under that tree.

Must admit I am also a fan of Shakespeare plays and King Arthurian legends. Recently I’ve traced a couple branches of my distant family tree back to the 1400s and 1500s in England, so maybe there’s some tiny fragment of genetic material that lights up when I see/hear those stories. I did manage to go to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre again on this trip. I had dinner before the play, near the school (still functioning!) where Shakespeare was purported to have attended as a boy in Stratford.

Anyway, imagine my delight when I saw this quilt (above) by Catherine and Tim Millar at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. It is a triptych titled “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”. The detailed stitching and fine story-telling applique was pretty mind-blowing. Kudos to the Millars! Were they inspired by the 2021 film with Dev Patel? I wonder….

I have uploaded the first batch photos from Birmingham’s Festival of Quilts, so take a peek now and watch for the next batch as I add to the gallery. Then check out our current collection of magical fabrics with dragons, castles, and a few remaining collectible LOTR & Elves-themed prints still in stock. They won’t last long! (I’ve been saving them for the release of the new LOTR)

Construction Zone Free Quilt Pattern

Clear the road! The Big Trucks are coming through!

Our special Labor Day Free Quilt Pattern captures the bold artwork of one of our favorite artists – Bob Giordano. There is a certain age when little kids are fascinated with Dump Trucks and Bulldozers…and they love to make big engine noises while playing with these trucks in the sand pit!

To make this generous 74″ x 74″ youth bed quilt, you will start with the central 24″ x 44″ panel, then cut up a second block panel and Bulldozer print, to piece with Solid Black. Finish with Dump Trucks, and then the Roadway Stripe.

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

We hope your holiday weekend is off to a creative start. Long weekends are when I like to go into my work space and start reorganizing and reviewing my stash (i.e. fondle my fabrics) to get those creative juices revved up for the next project. As the seasons start to turn, and in this case as I look forward to Autumn hues and cooler temps, I find that I come up with different color and fabric combinations. I am craving something different, and it all comes out when I start to audition fabrics on my work table.

Here in Boulder we have another 5 days of 95 degree weather on tap, but I am still planning a trip to the High Country in a couple weeks to photograph the annual explosion of Golden – that is our Aspen groves turning colors. There are so many resources online now that show Peak Season for different climate zones, starting with the Northern latitudes now, and working their way South into November. If you’ve been longing for a colorful Fall trip, now is the time to plan for that tapestry of vibrant kaleidoscope color that will inspire you into the Winter season! I am a member of the Leaf Peepers Club and I travel with a camera this time of year.

I am uploading photos from Birmingham‘s Festival of Quilts now, so take a peek now and check again in a couple days as I add to the gallery.

We would like to invite our local quilt guilds to come for tours again. Because we are still keeping our staff safe, I will schedule tours after-hours and we will limit the size of the group. If your group is interested in visiting us in the near future please contact us and I will schedule a time so I can personally lead a tour which will include my studio.

Free Quilt Pattern – Wolf Song

The phantom howl of a North Woods Wolf fills the frigid air, in this week’s exclusive Free Quilt Pattern. Wolf Medicine reflects the family bonds of the pack, symbolizing loyalty, teamwork, protection and playfulness. Native American lore sees wolves as sacred animals…instinctual and intuitive.

To make this 56″ x 64″ quilt design, you will start with the evocative 36″ x 44″ central panel, with layers of wolf images on a Medicine Wheel and wintery forest background. Add a stone texture and indigenous-inspired geometric stripe to make the border.

This beautiful Lap/Nap quilt is quick and easy to make….a great gift for a Lobo-Phile who dreams of running wild and free!

Satisfying Symmetry

Tonight I bring you this gorgeous Mandala round quilt by Polish artist Syla, as seen at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. Her intricate symmetrical applique, and her stunning use of trapunto stitching, makes this a truly inspirational quilt. The pebble stitching on the round Black border completes the effect.

You may be aware that drawing Mandalas is a huge art trend now, with many drawings and how-to videos uploaded to social media sites like Instagram. Of course medallion and mandala designs have been a part of quiltmaking for a long time. These days you can attempt a more complicated mandala, like this one, inspired by the artists who love to make detailed multi-layered mandalas.

Why do we love this type of design so much? There is order and stability in this perfect symmetrical shape…a visual antidote to the chaos raging outside. It is extremely satisfying to make all the identical pieces, then sew them together to make the larger pattern.

Mermaids have been inspiring filmmakers, artists, authors, and composers over many centuries, and this week’s Free Quilt Pattern features the dreamy artwork of one of our most popular designers.

To make this 47″ x 67″ quilt design, you will start with the 24″ x 44″ central panel, starring 3 beautiful mermaids set in a seaweed-scroll frame. We’ve added a richly saturated Indigo Hoffman Hand-Dye with the coordinating stripe, to make the undersea-themed border.

This dreamy quilt is sure to inspire fans of films like “The Little Mermaid”, “Splash”, “Harry Potter”, “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Aquaman”. We love Mermaid Movies!

What is Meaningful?

Wednesday evening I got home from the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. (Plus a couple extra days in the Worcestershire countryside with friends from London.) It was very meaningful to be involved with the SAQA exhibit “Forced to Flee” on the topic of refugees. I appreciated hearing some of the artists speak, at the lecture about the project. I am working on editing photos from the Festival of Quilts and my trip to Worcester, and will share them next week on my photo pages.

I have 2 quilts in this new companion book “Inspired by the Nation’s Capital” – an exhibit about Washington DC that will premiere at the Houston Quilt Festival. Congratulations to Donna DeSoto and all the artists involved in this project! Watch for my quilts (White House and Folger Shakespeare Library) in the book and the exhibit.

The CU Boulder Students are back this week, so traffic is heavy again, and the students were out enjoying today’s sunshine. Our warm weather is lasting longer than usual, so I have taken refuge reviewing our seasonal Autumn/Harvest category of fabrics. I may have to go spend some time with our Winter/Snow prints this weekend also. Ha.

With gas prices coming down, kids back in school, and cooler weather just around the corner (hopefully) I can feel my creative juices building up like a ripening peach. You know that feeling when you are full, ready to burst, but you are not quite sure what it is or where it will go? Now that we are in the almost-post-pandemic, I am anxious to break loose and take on new projects. Can you relate? But first, I need to go in and do some cleaning and organizing in my workspace. Perhaps you are doing the same thing this weekend….

One thing is very clear to me. Whatever I work on next must have meaning. It must have a purpose, or a goal. I am not sure yet if I will make an activist quilt, a healing quilt, or a skill-building quilt…but I know I need to make something that helps me to deal with a feeling of wasted time the last couple years. That feeling of an impending fertile explosion is a result of frustration I suppose, but I am determined to make it have meaning.

Are you having a mix of emotions around how to move into this almost-post-pandemic time also? You are not alone!

I would like to invite our local quilt guilds to come for tours again. Because we are still keeping our staff safe, I will schedule tours after-hours and we will limit the size of the group. If your group is interested in visiting us in the near future please contact us and I will schedule a time so I can personally lead a tour which will include my studio. It will be nice to see you in person and have a ‘normal’ gathering of quilters again.
