New Quilting Treasures, Tula Pink – Quilt Backing Bonanza

Greetings from Birmingham UK
My visit to the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham England is drawing to a close, and it has been a confirmation of my love of quilting, and quilters. It has been so enriching to see old friends and have real hugs. In fact there was some teary-eyed reunions. The quilt exhibition is an explosion of creative energy, and it got crowded enough that I had a little late-pandemic-anxiety. However I am happy to put on a mask in the crowd, and enjoy not only the quilts, but also the reactions of the viewers!

Right now I am just having a spot of tea before I meet a friend from the Bernina-verse, to drive down to Stratford Upon Avon. We’ll be having a pub dinner and then a proper Shakespeare play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on the River Avon. I like seeing the flocks of Swans in residence there. Lately I’ve been doing deeper research on ancestry.com and have traced several branches back to the 1400s in England, so returning to the UK carries an extra layer of interest. I am finishing Hilary Mantel’s 3rd and final book from the Wolf Hall trilogy, about Cromwell and the court of Henry VIII.

There is always something else going on at our hotel, in all the years I’ve been coming here, and at the moment it is overrun with elves, wizards, witches and nondescript costumed characters from another time and place (The Discworld convention). Everyone is very friendly and many smiles have been exchanged with the costumed characters. I just now shared an elevator with The Positive Affirmation Fairy and she gave me a card with this positive affirmation:
“I have the power to achieve my goals.”
“Today you are overflowing with power. Use this power to energize and promote your day.”
Well OK then! *smile*

I enjoyed being one of the speakers at the SAQA “Forced to Flee” presentation today, on the topic of Refugees. I spoke about being an artist activist, and activist curator and sponsor, an activist collector and retailer. We all have a voice, and we can all make a difference when we stand up and speak up for those with no voice and no power.

Tomorrow my old friend from London is picking me up and I am spending a few days in the countryside. After so many years of travel here, I’ve seen most of the major tourist attractions, so now we are visiting the places that the locals like in the summertime. We’ve been friends since 1987, and on this trip I get to meet her new 77 year old ‘boyfriend’. They have planned out a very busy few days together.

I am mindful of the fact that September and cooler weather are just around the corner, and the students have returned to their classrooms.
It’s a good time to be a quilter!

A Celebration of Color

I am dashing off this note to you before I head to the airport for the Festival of Quilts (FOQ) at Birmingham in the UK. This is my first overseas trip since the Tokyo Quilt Festival in January 2020! I am excited to be attending this big quilt festival with exhibits from all over Europe. The last time I attended FOQ was in August 2019.

eQuilter is sponsoring the SAQA “Forced to Flee” gallery at FOQ, on the topic of refugees. As you know this topic is even more timely now since the war in Ukraine started. The number of displaced people worldwide has surpassed 100 million for the first time. It is truly hard to comprehend, unless you have witnessed this firsthand. Because of our close relationship with our non-profit partners, I have had many meetings with those who have actually worked in refugee camps around the world. Today, one in every 78 people on earth is displaced. Through our partnerships with Doctors Without Borders, Mission of Love and Engineers Without Borders, we are using our business as a force for good and we thank you for your support of our family business and our charity program.

10 days ago you might have attended the Long Beach Quilt Festival, where we sponsored the “Celebration of Color” exhibit and cash prizes. I wanted to share this beautiful burst of color – the First Place winner in the Modern category of this contest. (quilt image above)

“Chroma Infinitum” by Susan McKinney – Artist Statement:
“Ordered chaos and infinite color. A promise of what lies beyond what is seen. Paper-pieced with over 50 colors from 77 unique block templates. Tessellated triangles were digitally drawn, no 2 triangles alike, then quilted by machine.”

Through the crazy Supply Chain Rollercoaster of the Pandemic, we have maintained our commitment to stocking Modern Solid products for you – currently we have over 640 colors of Modern Solid Cottons, and over 100 Solid Pre-Cuts for your slicing and stitching pleasure.

Recently I was interviewed via Zoom by Bob Ruggiero, VP from Quilts Inc (organizer of the Quilt Festival in Long Beach and Houston) on the topic of COLOR, and you can watch that interview HERE.

Free Quilt Pattern – Northern Lights Wildlife

Somewhere in the Far North, the short summer season is coming to a close under the Aurora Borealis. Hang this on the wall of your cabin, or put a flannel backing on this Nap/Lap quilt for a super cozy winter snuggle! You will love the gorgeous colors and the dreamy ambiance of this special quilt design.

Sunset, Sunset

Batik and Blender Fabric Clearance

I don’t know about you, but I am getting pretty tired of living in ‘historic times’. Even though the weather patterns seem to be out of whack, there is still a predictable pattern of the seasons, even if wonky. Mother Nature is reminding us it is not nice to mess with her (remember the 1970s margarine commercial?) but she still keeps some semblance of changing seasons so I am looking forward to cooler weather on the horizon here. The phases of the Moon continue despite the chaos on the surface of Planet Earth. And there is comfort and peace in those cycles. Sunrise, Sunset. Winter Spring Summer and Fall. New Moons and Full Moons. Beginnings and endings.

Today I was present with a friend when he got the phone call from his son, that his girlfriend said “yes” when he proposed. As I listened to this father expressing his joy, and welcoming the young lady to the family, I felt honored to witness such an emotional moment. Honestly I was a little verklempt as well. He advised his son to enjoy every moment of these few special days, because they were days that only come once in a lifetime. How true. How wise. Major turning points in our lives, are often burned into our memories and are places we can return to in times of disquiet.

On the way home tonight I found myself humming “Sunrise, Sunset”. Those of us who make quilts mark the seasons as times to start projects, times to work hard on projects, and times to finish projects. Whether it is for a wedding, a baby, leaving for college, comfort during an illness, a beloved’s memorial, or to hang in an exhibit…the flow of the seasons urges us to continue our work. Every stitch helps us to stay grounded, to stay in the moment, to work towards that goal and the final stitches in the binding. And then we turn the page.

Free Quilt Pattern – Twelve Days of Christmas

Here’s a very special Christmas quilt project for all of you North Woods and Wildlife lovers!

This week’s exclusive Free Quilt Pattern features Beavers, Squirrels, Moose, Foxes, Raccoons, Swans, Canadian Geese, Otters, Calling Birds, French Hens, Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear tree for a fresh take on the beloved song. (Did you know this carol’s lyrics were first published in England in the late 18th Century?)

To make this 56″ x 56″ Winter-themed quilt design, you will start with the 36″ x 44″ book panel which has been cleverly recruited to serve as blocks for the Twelve WILD Days of Christmas. You will cut a Stonehenge blender for the sashing to combine the blocks, then piece Snowflake blenders and a White-on-White star print, to make the Diamond Border.

To make this extra snuggly, you can use a Flannel for the backing. Whether it is used as a Lap/Nap quilt, or a special holiday wall hanging, it is sure to delight the Nature Lovers in your home.

Free Quilt Pattern – Mountain Eagle

Your Free Quilt Pattern – Mountain Eagle – Free Shipping

A majestic Eagle soars over a dream-like mountain landscape, in this weekend’s Free Quilt Pattern. The alcohol ink technique of artist Melanie Samra has been a huge success with eQuilter customers, so we continue to stock her enigmatic paintings and we’ve designed this exclusive quilt design for Melanie’s fans.

To make this 48″ x 66″ quilt design, you will start with the central 24″ x 44″ landscape panel. Then piece the Hoffman Hand-Dye and “Soar” collection blenders to create the pieced border, which reminds us of a marble inset tile design.

Is Eagle your spirit animal? The Eagle messenger encourages us to soar high and see things from a broader perspective. Native American tribes credit the Eagle as bringing wisdom, vision and courage. Spiritual traditions see salvation and hope in the Eagle’s message. The soothing colors of this Eagle artwork may bring these messages of hope and vision to those inspired by Melanie’s artwork. We are inspired as well.
