Satisfying Symmetry

Tonight I bring you this gorgeous Mandala round quilt by Polish artist Syla, as seen at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. Her intricate symmetrical applique, and her stunning use of trapunto stitching, makes this a truly inspirational quilt. The pebble stitching on the round Black border completes the effect.

You may be aware that drawing Mandalas is a huge art trend now, with many drawings and how-to videos uploaded to social media sites like Instagram. Of course medallion and mandala designs have been a part of quiltmaking for a long time. These days you can attempt a more complicated mandala, like this one, inspired by the artists who love to make detailed multi-layered mandalas.

Why do we love this type of design so much? There is order and stability in this perfect symmetrical shape…a visual antidote to the chaos raging outside. It is extremely satisfying to make all the identical pieces, then sew them together to make the larger pattern.
