Sewing in the time of COVID-19 – Week 11

The last couple days I’ve been in an online ‘Chromazone’ conference with The Color Marketing Group. It has been inspiring to hang out with my color tribe (international color trend forecasters) and talk about what will happen in 2022.

This afternoon I am sitting in the office alone, teardrops on my keyboard, weeping over what is happening in our country now. I know so many of you, probably anybody who reads the news, feels the same. The best thing I could think of was to call up my mom (who has been in lockdown in her nursing home since mid-March) and tell her how much I love her. She taught me to care for others, to stay positive, to empathize with those who are suffering. She is in a steep decline right now so every conversation with her is precious. She doesn’t understand what is happening in the news. Honestly, neither do I.

On the plus side, I am grateful every day that I found my way to the quilting world 30 years ago. After leaving the garment industry in New York, I was looking for a new creative career with caring loving supportive people. The day I discovered the quilting world (stumbled across a copy of Quilters Newsletters at a local supermarket) the hair on the back of my neck stood up, and I knew I’d found what I was looking for.

Last night we had an online graduation party for Sophie. It was bittersweet, but we had friends attend from all over the country. We even saw Pokey Bolton, who was the host of Quilting Arts TV when Sophie was a guest. We felt the love and support of our community, and we felt so blessed.

Tonight I am praying for peace, for all of our health and safety, and I am so thankful that we have each other. Thank you for supporting our family-owned business, and thank you for the long hours you’ve invested in sewing masks and keeping your community and loved ones safe over the last couple months. This too shall pass.

with gratitude,
Luana and Paul

It is hard for all of us! Such a terrible situation for most…except the thug looters. Others are protesting….and the opportunist troublemakers are inciting which only will make matters worse. I wish we knew how to help. I have been making quilts and sending quilts to El Paso. As a retired migrant bilingual teacher for 44 years, the children and families in detention camps tears my heart apart. I used to drive a little school bus with pop out tables into the lettuce fields in California to try to teach literacy to the children who couldn’t attend school.

Have you heard if the 25 million stitch project to try to bring attention to the world refugee situation? I started too late to be part of the first exhibition but they still need almost 1000 pieces to make 25 million stitches….each stitch represents a world refugee. I’d love to share pix of mine with you as it speaks to our racial division in this country….my headline: keep the immigrants! Deport the racists! Hope to finish it this week…..As a 71 year old retiree, it makes me feel like I am at least trying to bring world awareness.

I love all the charities you support with our purchases. I usually opt to let you decide which group. God bless you for adopting a beautiful world child and doing all you and Paul and sophie do. It hasn’t gone unnoticed.
