Southern Exposure

We are not ready to travel over the border yet, but this week I’ve been reviewing photos from my travels to our Four Corners area, and South to Mexico, Cuba and Guatemala…enjoying the colors of the ceramics, the handwoven ikat textiles, the colorful embroidery, the succulents and cacti, and the tropical flowers.

Those colors show up in the home and the art of Frida Kahlo, the Day of the Dead costumes and decorations, and even the colors of the houses. There are also treasured memories and photos of the colorful retro cars and mosaics of Cuba. All the travel photos I have taken in the past are bringing me joy and inspiration, so I thought I’d share them with you also.

In the late 80s I spent a month in Brazil, after taking a crash course in Portuguese. I had a few years working as a jewelry designer in between the fashion industry, and discovering the quilting industry. So I took a trip to Brazil to buy gemstones. I was traveling in raggedy clothes with no jewelry and no camera, looking like a starving student but with a thick wad of cash sewn into the waistband of my faded ripped jeans, to haggle and purchase gemstones when I got to the mines. The lasting effect of that trip is my deep love of Brazilian jazz. When I came back home to New York I had fun playing with all those colorful stones in my jewelry designs.

Color is what has inspired me in my meandering career path over the decades, and it is such a joy to be able to celebrate COLOR with you each week at eQuilter. What’s YOUR Color Story?

…sharing your love of fabric,
Luana and Paul
