Sunset, Sunset

Batik and Blender Fabric Clearance

I don’t know about you, but I am getting pretty tired of living in ‘historic times’. Even though the weather patterns seem to be out of whack, there is still a predictable pattern of the seasons, even if wonky. Mother Nature is reminding us it is not nice to mess with her (remember the 1970s margarine commercial?) but she still keeps some semblance of changing seasons so I am looking forward to cooler weather on the horizon here. The phases of the Moon continue despite the chaos on the surface of Planet Earth. And there is comfort and peace in those cycles. Sunrise, Sunset. Winter Spring Summer and Fall. New Moons and Full Moons. Beginnings and endings.

Today I was present with a friend when he got the phone call from his son, that his girlfriend said “yes” when he proposed. As I listened to this father expressing his joy, and welcoming the young lady to the family, I felt honored to witness such an emotional moment. Honestly I was a little verklempt as well. He advised his son to enjoy every moment of these few special days, because they were days that only come once in a lifetime. How true. How wise. Major turning points in our lives, are often burned into our memories and are places we can return to in times of disquiet.

On the way home tonight I found myself humming “Sunrise, Sunset”. Those of us who make quilts mark the seasons as times to start projects, times to work hard on projects, and times to finish projects. Whether it is for a wedding, a baby, leaving for college, comfort during an illness, a beloved’s memorial, or to hang in an exhibit…the flow of the seasons urges us to continue our work. Every stitch helps us to stay grounded, to stay in the moment, to work towards that goal and the final stitches in the binding. And then we turn the page.
