Have you ever had a lucid dream? Do you dream in full color? Do your dreams feel as real as your waking life? Do you dream about images and colors and designs, to wake up and sketch them out for your next quilt or art project? If so, you can join me because this is the kind of dreaming I’ve been doing since I was a kid…as long as I can remember. This week I am dreaming of wild animals, and it is overlaid by several wildlife encounters in the last week or two. Today I spotted a bald eagle on a tall tree near our house. We get migrating eagles this time of year, and they stop off at Celestial Seasonings next door for a prairie dog snack. Except…the prairie dogs have been removed to make way for a new development of a few hundred apartments on Celestial’s land. (Which used to be a prairie dog habitat) On the other end of the street, just a few blocks away, they are laying the pipes to service this new neighborhood. When I drive by I think of that Joni Mitchell song….”they paved paradise, and put up a parking lot”. So the eagles may not be stopping over here much longer. We are still seeing fox, raccoon, owls and hawks, and the occasional bear and bobcat wandering through our rural suburban neighborhood. I worry about their shrinking habitat. We love this panel with Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It reminds me of…my childhood. I had my first bear encounter around age 10 at summer music camp at the base of Longs Peak. I couldn’t understand why everybody made such a big deal about it. The bear ran one way, and I ran the other way. We had a moment when we locked eyes. I’ve been dreaming of bears and other wild creatures, ever since. (I really love this rainbow-hued Bear Batik Panel. It reminds me of my bear dreams.) We are still accepting donated quilts for Florida hurricane victims.
