eQuilter is excited to host Gemstone quilt artist MJ Kinman in our classroom this Fall!
MJ's Gemstone Patterns have been blowing out of our Pattern category, and her large Gemstone pieced quilts in quilt festivals invariably attract a crowd, exclaiming "Wow!" and "How did she do that?!?" as they admire her intricate artistry!
MJ's Class Description:
My approach to this class is as an exercise in exploration, a constant asking of the question “What if?” By introducing new ideas as possibilities – not as absolutes – participants are apt to approach them with less resistance, playing with an idea in terms of their own experience. The exercise in exploration pertains to both participants’ artistic and personal landscapes.
Day One: Creating Safety & Treasure Hunting
The first task of the day is to set the tone and suggest specific actions that create a safe space for play, exploration, and discovery by eliminating fear and all its manifestations -- judgement, competition, anxiety, and frustration.
The morning is devoted to sharing examples of finding exquisite designs deep within faceted gemstones and then giving them time to play with their own images.
The afternoon of the first day is devoted to play and experimentation, culminating in selecting an image and preparing a mock-up.
Day Two: Chart & Piece Their Faceted Landscape
The second day is devoted to learning techniques to chart and piece their faceted landscape. During this time, we will prepare an 18" square freezer paper template, transfer using grid technique, code the facets, and proceed to construction, embellishment and facing techniques.
Materials fee of $5 per student will be paid to the teacher at the time of the workshop for images of gems and cut-outs.
Supply list will be provided after registration.
Skill level for this workshop is Confident Beginner to Intermediate.
I like to tell people I make the biggest diamonds in the world. The adventure started 22 years ago when I discovered an image of a gorgeous gem. With only a basic understanding of quiltmaking, I was unsure how to transform that image into a quilt. I spent the next few years searching for the right techniques and, seven years later, I made my first gem. My latest series, entitled “Bourbon Diamonds” celebrates Kentucky’s favorite spirit. As a certified Executive Bourbon Steward, I am pleased to offer bourbon tastings in addition to classes. My current series is based on the National Gem Collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. My work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, and national competitions, and has been featured in Quilting Arts Magazine and on Quilting Arts TV. My gems are also included in private and corporate collections, including Maker’s Mark Distillery.
