Adapted from the traditional Egyptian Galabia (man's robe), this versatile shirt may be made for casual or elegant occasions for either men or women. The original garments are ankle length and unadorned; we offer a modern shirt-length version that may be left plain or decorated with contrasting yoke, applique, or soutache braid in typical designs, and/or handmade cording and knotted buttons. Instructions for optional handwork are included in the pattern, as well as suggested fabric layouts to make the long Galabia. This shirt is very loose fitting with slightly flared sleeves curving under the arms to meet side panels with slit pockets, and front and back yokes that can be turned to either the inside or outside. Pattern pieces have different cutting lines for sizes ranging from Slender Women to Extra-large Men. Suggested Fabrics: Crisp or soft fabrics such as muslin, lightweight denim, broadcloth, or light to medium-weight cotton. For applique pieces use 100% cotton. Fabric requirements: Shirt - Extra-large: 36" wide 3 1/2 yds, 45" wide 3 yds. All other sizes: 36" wide 3 1/2 yds, 45" wide 2 7/8 yds. Ankle-length Galabia - All Sizes up to 5 ft 4" tall: 36" wide 5 yds, 45" wide 4 3/8 yds. Up to 5 ft 10" tall: 36" wide 5 1/2 yds, 45" 4 5/8 yds. All yardages include matching yoke. If contrasting yoke is desired, it will require 2/3 yd of either 36" or 45" fabric. Do not decrease above yardages. Width at lower edge: Medium 55". Finished length of shirt at lower edge from base of neck: Medium 28". Egyptian Shirt pattern by Folkwear. Sizes S-XL.
