The design is printed on one half of the sampler. The other half of the sampler has instructions which will wash out. You can stitch through both layers for a little heavier fabric if using it for a quilt square or you can stitch through a single layer and add your own backing. In Japan, the samplers are stitched through both layers, hemmed and use for tea towels or table decorations. Sashiko pre-printed samplers have wash-out stitching lines. Temari balls sashiko design, finished size is about 12" x 12", all lines wash out after stitching. Made in Japan.
