*****
I Love Color.

Color has been my constant trusted companion through the different chapters of my life, and I’ve been thinking about the parade of distinctive colors along my storyline, as I grew into the person I am today. From small town girl to big city fashion designer, from Colorado to Los Angeles – Hong Kong – New York City, and back to Boulder, from single career girl to business owner, wife and mother…every chapter had a different main color… like a theme song!

I have always been fascinated by the research showing how we are affected emotionally and mentally by color, but especially how our physiology is changed by certain colors. At the CMG conference we were reminded of Baker-Miller Pink, which was shown to reduce violent or aggressive behavior. That is an extreme example, but it points to the fact that we are affected by colors, whether or not we are conscious of that idea.

It has always seemed obvious to me that we crave colors, the same way our body can crave foods that provide a particular nutrient. In the past our society imposed a lot of rules that disconnected us from this intuitive connection to the healing power of color, but fortunately every decade has peeled away more layers of these silly rules.

Today we wear White after Labor Day, men wear Pink, and we don’t rely on a color consultant to tell us what colors we can and cannot wear. Dark tones are worn in Summer, and brights are worn in Winter, which is the opposite of the “rules” that were imposed when I started my fashion design career in 1980.

The most luxurious color one can have in a big city… is White. My NYC friends have explained this to me. They come home, remove shoes and clothes, take a shower, and then they can relax in their Pure White living space. We used to think of an all white space as being boring.

Last night I was watching a TV series set in the late fifties in Australia, and the main matriarch character was wearing a rich Rosey-Mauve suit. “Wow! Look at that color!” I remarked to Paul, and then the other character said to her “You have really gone wild – you even are wearing purple!” – which was a great illustration of how color has made a bold statement about our social position throughout history.

How does this apply to quilting? First of all let me say that our customers are not only sewing quilts, but also sewing fashion, home dec, crafts, etc. Our business has always been about selling Art and Color on fabric, and we know that when you buy something over the internet from our huge, but highly curated collection, it is because the image or color really spoke to you. Whether you put it in a quilt, or another type of sewing project, it is about you intuitively being drawn to the color for a variety of reasons. You don’t have to figure it out – just take a bite!

Whether you crave chocolate or carrot juice, broccoli or blueberries, and whether you take in physical nutrition or visual color stimulation, all that matters is that you allowed yourself to recognize a craving and took action. Of course with fabric there are no calories, only the joy of plumping your stash and having a bigger color palette from which to plan your next project!

Right now I am craving a certain shade of Wasabi Green… how about YOU?

Thanksgiving is about Family, Gratitude, & Love

Thnx

Here at eQuilter, we want to say hello from our family and staff, to you and your family. We know that many of our products will be made into gifts and heirlooms that are made with love for members of your family, and we never forget that as we prepare and ship your orders.

With your help, we have reached another milestone. We have now exceeded $1.3 million raised for charity, not to mention all of the quilts that you have donated to help those in need. Here is a photo of our wonderful staff holding some of the quilts you’ve sent for earthquake victims in Nepal, and that is on top of the 10,000+ quilts we’ve collected and distributed since 9/11.

In this era of multiple emails blasting about Black Friday, we want to remind you that our industry was founded by independent retailers…mostly women…who wanted to share their passion with others. We are one of those thousands of Mom and Pop indie businesses who make up this wonderful world of quilting which now encircles the globe.

eQuilter remains committed to giving back, not just to charities like Doctors Without Borders and Mission of Love, but also to sponsor and support so many quilt festivals, exhibits and contests around the world. This is our way of saying thank you to our customers and our industry, for making us a favorite place to shop for unique quality fabrics, sewing and quilting supplies. We are grateful every day, for the opportunity to be of service to our wonderful creative friends in so many countries.

This year we have sponsored shows and prizes for:
Alliance for American Quilts, Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK, Brazil Quilt Festival, Canadian Quilt Festival, Carrefour European Patchwork, Quilt National at Dairy Barn, Mexico Quilt Festival, New Zealand, Houston Quilt Festival (Group Quilts and National Parks), Rocky Mtn Quilt Museum, Sacred Threads, SAQA, Visions, San Jose Textile & Quilt Museum….and more!

It is an honor to support the organizations who plan these events, and even more so to support the artists who share their amazing talent with the rest of us at these exhibits!

We wish you a day of peace and gratitude with your loved ones this Thanksgiving, and we thank you for your support of our family business, and our eQuilter Charity Program.

Free Pattern – Tribal Instincts

Capture

Journey to Africa’s tropical grasslands with Painted Elephants and Savanna Zebras, in today’s Free Pattern...featuring fabrics from the ‘Tribal Instincts’ collection by Ro Gregg for Fabri-Quilt.

Earthy multicolor wildlife fabrics are combined with soft Patina Green and Almond Cream blenders, playing off a rich Henna Brown sashing. Colorful elephants are pieced into tribal medallions and set in a diamond block, while a herd of multi-hued galloping zebras form a wild border.

All you need is a Land Rover, a pair of binoculars, and a sturdy sewing machine! Well, maybe not the Land Rover, but good luck rounding up those zebras with your ruler and rotary cutter.

Houston Video Reviews & Interviews

Our videos from Houston are UP!
Many thanks to Bonnie McCaffery for filming and editing our videos again.

This year our 5 videos focus on the amazing artists of our quilting world:

Marianne Williamson was a featured artist in Houston, and we want to feature her as well. Her new book is in stock, and we also carry many of her favorite threads including the gorgeous variegated Oliver Twist thread line.

As you know we love the organization SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) – we’ve interviewed their artists and collaborated on a fundraiser collection by SAQA artists, with Andover Fabrics.

This year we have 2 videos that start off in the SAQA exhibit – the Animal-themed video (please note the SAQA companion catalog is in stock now!)- and the People/Portraits video.

We are also excited to have interviewed the organizer of the National Parks exhibit – Donna Desoto. (she is also the author of the upcoming book on this exhibit)

Lastly we take a sneak peek at just a few of the Japanese quilts in Houston this year. Watch for my visit to the Tokyo Quilt Festival in January 2016, or check out my previous photo albums from past Tokyo Quilt Festivals.

* CUBA ARTS TOUR *

Registrations for my tour to Cuba are now OPEN and we expect the trip to fill FAST so don’t delay if you want to be on the first tour which will be May 8-15, 2016.

Creative Nudge – Aloha Bear Hugs

Untitled-1

Tonight I am writing to you from Honolulu, where I am visiting Paul’s 92 year old mother. She lives alone now, since we lost Paul’s dad, so we worry about her. She is keeping herself busy by knitting slippers and crocheting leis (Hawaiian-style garlands) for visitors and fundraisers. Her house is full of her paintings, but she can no longer see well enough to paint. However she still plays cards with friends once a week, and gets out to have lunch, or catch a film. We hope we can be that active at 92!

I had a great long weekend in San Diego at the Color Marketing Group conference, excluding the near-hurricane winds the night before I left! All of my fellow Color Geeks were there and we had a great time talking over current and long-term color trends. However the shocking events in Paris, could not help but color our predictions for the future. Over the weekend we watched as Facebook and landmarks around the world turned Red White and Blue – the colors of the French flag. All the complex color theories we had discussed, suddenly ground to a halt, as the world turned to the primary colors of France’s banner. We also discussed how difficult it is to predict future colors when we can’t predict the outcome of a presidential election. (If the US elects their first woman president for instance, it would be a huge influence on color trends.)

Let me say again (if you missed our weekend newsletter) that our hearts and minds are turned to the people of Paris, and we are sending you a big quilted hug across the Atlantic, and wishing you comfort and peace. It is impossible to comprehend how you are navigating the emotions and uncertainty of the aftermath, so we will pray for peace and healing.

On Sunday after the color conference, I went out to the San Diego Zoo. I had not been to the zoo for decades, and I knew they have Giant Panda bears and African Elephants, so I called an Uber car and headed off on a photo safari. After taking the Tram across the HUGE park, I walked down to the Panda Trek. It was the only place where I had to stand in line to get a glimpse of an animal. The young male panda was hiding because some kids had been yelling, but the 24 year old mother panda was happily out facing the crowd, chewing on her pile of bamboo. I was so excited to be able to photograph a real live panda! As you may know, our daughter Sophie was adopted from China, and she has always loved anything having to do with pandas. You can click on this link to learn more about the Giant Panda bears, and watch them on a Live Cam.

So this is my happy bear hug to all of you, and especially to our friends in Paris.

I’ll be flying home on a Red-Eye Thursday night, back in the office Friday.

Aloha!

Our Hearts to Paris

I am writing to you from my hotel in San Diego, where I am attending the Color Marketing Group International Summit.

Yesterday afternoon as the news started to trickle in, about something terrible that happened in Paris, we all felt sick at heart. By the time the scope of the event unfolded in the evening, we all stopped to focus on Paris, and to send our prayers to all of those affected by the tragedy.

I have already written to our friends in Paris, but I want to also reach out to anyone affected, to let you know that here in the US we are all stunned but also sending you our condolences and support. If we could reach across the Atlantic, we would give you a long group hug.

If any group is considering organizing a quilt challenge/exhibit in relation to the events in Paris, please contact me as a possible sponsor.

Here at the Color Conference, we are discussing color forecasting and trends, but much of the discussion is on the implications of larger issues like climate change and migrants/refugees, and how that will affect trends from a philosophical perspective. The design professionals attending the conference come from a wide range of industries, from cars and cosmetics, to paint and floor coverings.

I had lunch today with international color expert and author Lee Eiseman – the VP at Pantone who chooses and announces the Color of the Year. No she did not reveal that color! I got one little hint that I will keep under my hat, and we can all be surprised next month when it goes public.

Due to safety (and other) concerns, the surgeons have delayed their trip to Guatemala, so I will not be going there on Nov 27 after all. The cleft palate surgery trip will happen in the Spring, but Mission of Love will continue to do their work there for the orphans and impoverished Mayan children and families, and we will continue to support their projects through our eQuilter charity program.

If you made it this far, I want to tell you this was my single favorite fabric at Quilt Market! The whole group is gorgeous, but the panel and stripe just blew my mind, especially as a William Morris fan!
