Rome Art Quilt Reception

from the Oct 1 eQuilter newsletter: (last Tuesday)

LuanaColloseum_550

I am writing to you from the Rome Fiumicino Airport in Italy, before I board my plane to fly home Tuesday. I've taken lots of photos, and I will be sharing them with you once I get home and the dust settles. My 5 days in Venice was filled with textile research, and even a sighting of the George Clooney wedding party! My 3 days in Rome culminated in the reception for the quilt art reception at the US Embassy, hosted by David Lane?the US ambassador to the UN. eQuilter was invited to be a sponsor of this event, along with Aurifil Threads, an Italian thread manufacturer.

During the opening reception, I was drawn to a beautiful African woman who was wearing the most gorgeous African floral gown, with a Kente cloth sash over her shoulder. She turned out to be the Ghana ambassador to Italy! I also met the Canadian ambassador and had a conversation about all the packages we ship to Canada.

Pam Holland and I have spent the last 2 days tromping all over Rome, covering about 8 miles a day on foot and visiting obscure Villas and art museums. Pam was one of the artists who met the challenge and created a quilt on the topic of World Hunger. Her quilt included a portrait of a man we photographed in India last September. It was wonderful to see that image come full circle, to be shared in a exhibition intended to raise awareness of the issues of World Hunger around the globe. I also met the German man who founded the Chicken Project (somewhat similar to the Heifer Project) and who lived in Afghanistan for 7 years, running the Chicken Project in that country.

Many thanks to Susan Fiorentino for inviting us to be a part of this event at the embassy again. The exhibit will be showing in 2 or 3 public venues, and we will share that information as soon as the dates are firm. It was exciting to learn that many of the artists bought their fabric from eQuilter, and in particular Elinor bought all of her fruit and vegetable prints from us, for her entry into this exhibit.

My takeaway from this experience is this – when you have an opportunity to participate in a quilt challenge – take the challenge! An invitation was given to 200 quilt artists, but only 10 responded. Their works will now tour very special venues in Europe, raising awareness for such an important cause. And now? back to our studios and back to work!

Venice and Rome

From the 9/27 eQuilter newsletter: (last Saturday)

In case you missed my newsletter earlier this week, I've been in Venice working on a design research project. It just also happened to be the week that George Clooney's wedding party arrived in Venice! A couple nights ago we were waiting for a vaporetto (water bus) on the Grand Canal after dinner, and about 20 speed boats came racing up the canal, causing everyone look to see what was happening.

Half the boats were full of party-goers in evening gowns and tuxedos. The other half were paparazzi crammed into boats, standing up with their super telephoto lenses, and flashing away with their cameras. A couple police boats followed at the rear. It was like something out of a movie. George's very own wedding movie – ha!

Today I took the train down to Rome, and met my travel buddy Pam Holland. We are in town for a private reception for an art quilt exhibit at the US Embassy in Rome. This reception is not open to the public, but the exhibit will move on to at least one public venue, so stay tuned for those details. The theme is "World Hunger" and it is in conjunction with the UN's World Hunger program.

I would like to extend this invitation to our friends in Rome, Italy:

Dear Artists and those who appreciate The Arts:
Please join in welcoming Luana Rubin and Pamela Holland to Rome with an informal pizza dinner.

When: Sunday September 28
Time: starting at 6:30pm
Where: San Marco Restorante/ pizzeria/wine bar
via Sardegna 38/D (near the U.S. Embassy)
tel: 06-42824893
Cost: Choice of several pizzas, glass of wine or beer – 15 euro (other items available from their menu)

Tuesday evening I'll be home in Colorado, dreaming of Italy…and will share photos from Venice after I return home.

Creative Nudge – Colors of Italy

ColorsItaly_550

Greetings from Venice. Yes, ~that~ Venice. *smile* I am here doing research for a design project. Today I spent hours at the Gallerie dell' Accademia, photographing textile details from Renaissance-era paintings by Venetian artists. It is very clear that the Venetian painters wanted to make the cut velvets and silk tapestries shimmer, in their portraits of wealthy Venetians!

I am also taking a series of color reference photos, and here's one I really loved because it shows 3 colors of the Terra Cotta with a complementary Blue sky. I've surrounded the photo with fabrics in the same color story, to give you some design inspiration.

Unfortunately the Fortuny Museum is temporarily closed, but I am tracking down some other textile-related exhibits. Perhaps if you come here, you can visit the Fortuny?

Last night I arrived as an EPIC rainstorm hit the Marco Polo Airport. I shared a water taxi with some other people and we raced across the lagoon ahead of the storm. About a half hour later as I got into my hotel room, the storm hit Venice. It sounded like hail against the windows. Because my hotel building is 600 years old, the floor slants, so the water that leaked in under the glass shutter doors ran all the way down/across my floor. It was like having my own private stream in the room. A section of the Accademia was closed today due to severe water damage! However today was a lovely mild and sunny day.

If you'd like to follow along with me on this trip, you can watch a couple of my favorite Venice-sited films: "Summertime" with Katherine Hepburn, and "De-Lovely" about the life of Cole Porter. Next weekend… Roman Holiday! I'll be at the opening reception for a quilt art exhibit on World Hunger, at the US Embassy, presented in conjunction with the UN. Until then… Ciao!

Today I am writing to you from New York, as I prepare to leave for the "Quilters Take Manhattan" conference at FIT. Tomorrow night I fly to Italy, and next weekend I will be at the US Embassy in Rome. More about that later…

A couple weeks ago my dad Ken Collins had a fall and was rushed to a hospital in Portland Oregon. On Monday, while I was at the Art Makers conference in Denver, I got the message that he had died in hospital, from complications of Parkinsons. He was suffering terribly for a long time so I am grateful that he is at peace now, and I send wishes of peace and comfort to my stepmom Bev, and my brother and 3 stepbrothers who grew up with him.

When I signed up for this creative conference (Art Makers) I was not sure what compelled me to take up 3 days of creative indulgence just before leaving on an overseas trip. As it turned out, receiving the news midway through the conference, making art without a deadline or business end-use was the perfect therapy to process what was going on at that time.

Many times in life I have turned to my art to help me process the changes that Life has strewn along the path. Writing, painting, sewing and quilting are all healing expressions that help us to access and release whatever is going on in the unconscious mind and heart.

Every day is a gift, and every day is an opportunity express our creativity and share with others.

Nobu Fujiyama Serene & A Piece of Quilting History

This week's collectible favorite is full of graceful elegance and Asian sophistication, in Kona Bay's much-anticipated "Nobu Fujiyama Serene" collection.

KBNSE3IN

KBNSERDR

Four years ago, we lost one of the beloved founding mothers of the quilting industry – Bonnie Leman was the founder of Quilters Newsletter Magazine in 1969. I have a special connection to Bonnie, and I have a story to share.

In 1990 I left New York (where I had worked in the garment industry) and moved back home to Boulder Colorado. I was looking for a place to park my passion for fabric, color and design.

One day I stumbled across a group of quilting magazines at a local grocery store, and my eye immediately went to Quilters Newsletter. As I paged through the magazine, the hair on the back of my neck stood up, and I knew this was what I'd been looking for…and that was how I first got involved with quilting.

In 1999 Paul and I started eQuilter in the basement of our home, and years later I would become close friends with Bonnie's daughter Mary Austin, who had taken over running Quilters Newsletter.

Fast forward to this weekend – I went to Bonnie's Estate Sale. I wanted to find something special that would be a little piece of this family's history.

As I walked in, I saw a lot of people rummaging through domestic odds and ends, and my heart sank. Perhaps I was too late to find the special memento I sought. As I walked further into the house something glinted in the corner of my eye, and I gasped! Draped over the railing was a beautiful formal kimono in shades of deep tangerine, with tons of heavy gold metallic and soaring white cranes. This was it!

I took it to the front desk, and asked if there were any old sewing machines. "In the garage" I was told, and there in the corner I found a 1912 Wilson treadle machine draped in cobwebs. "I'll take them both!"

I texted Mary to let her know I'd found these 2 items, and drove away with my treasures secured in my car. Not surprisingly, she texted back to confirm that these were indeed 2 special pieces from the family's story. Not history, but HERstory.

KimonoTreadle

The kimono was a gift from the publisher of Patchwork Quilt Tsushin around 1990. His name was Tadanobu Seto. Some of you will know him for his work with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's International Quilt Study Center. Seto was an admirer of Bonnie's accomplishments, and he brought it to her on a trip to Colorado.

The 1912 Wilson Treadle was a display and practice fixture, and frequent photo prop in the Quilts & Other Comforts shop, located in Wheatridge in the early 70's. Bonnie's husband George acquired it while traveling the neighboring states in their Quiltmobile in 1974-77.

I have always felt a deep connection to this family, and it is just one of the many stories of multi-generational family businesses in the quilting industry.

We are in the process of reconfiguring front offices at eQuilter, and I am going to display these up front so if you come to pick up a package here, or come with your quilt guild for a tour, you'll be able to see these 2 pieces of quilting history that we've saved for the next generation!

Creative Nudge – Latin Color Trends

MayanWeaving_550

The hot bright colors from Latin America continue to filter into the color trends of the US, along with the Day of the Dead, indigenous Mayan textiles, and Mexican folk art florals. It is a whirling melange of colors, like the ruffled and tiered skirts of Mexican dancers.

If you've visited places like Santa Fe, San Antonio, or Sedona, you've been exposed to Hispanic and Latino food and culture. Guacamole and Margaritas are ubiquitous, and restaurant chains like Chipotle and Qdoba spread the gospel of the Burrito from coast to coast. Lady Guadalupe spreads her garment of many floral colors, and invites us in to worship the divine beauty of the Rainbow.

There is a palette of colors that come from Mexico and Central America, which are being absorbed into mainstream culture. These are colors that make us smile, and put us in the mood for a Fiesta!

Hot Mexican Pink, Chili Pepper Red, Cactus Flower Pink, Mango Orange, Lime Green, Amethyst Purple, Golden Topaz and Turquoise are the colors of the jewels, flowers and spices of the Hispanic culture.

I used to design jewelry, and I took buying trips to Arizona and Brazil to look for colorful stones. Navajo turquoise, Golden Topaz from Ouro Preto, Amethyst from Belo Horizonte, and Colombian Emeralds were the colors that filled my dreams when I closed my eyes. The flowers and spices filled my senses in the markets, and I saw all these colors reflected in the fabrics worn by the local people. In the open markets, you experience the colors with all 5 senses!

When you work with these colors in your sewing studio, turn on some Latin music and let the rhythm move you!

The photo above was taken on my trip to Guatemala with Mission of Love, during the Cleft Palate Surgery Trip. This indigenous Mayan woman is showing her daughter how to hand-weave the brightly colored ikat yarn-dyes, for which Guatemala is famous.
