The Color Orange
Sewing in the time of COVID-19 - Week 26
What a week it has been!...and for those of you on the West Coast it is not over yet. Here in Colorado we had 100 degree temps with fire and smoke a week ago, then snow and a freeze on Tuesday. Now we are following the fires that are affecting friends and family in California, Oregon and Washington. Our news feeds have been filled with the color Orange from the fires, and it is not a happy shade of Orange.
The little town of Molalla where my parents went to school and got married, has been under evacuation from the wildfires. My brother whose family lives east of Portland has been on the cusp of evacuation. We hope that you and your loved ones stay safe and out of harm's way.
I have had some queries about doing a quilt drive for fire victims, but because the fires are in so many states including here in Colorado, I suggest we focus on the most urgent disaster relief for now: donate to trusted local organizations who are providing food, water, shelter, etc. for those who have evacuated or lost their homes.
eQuilter has come on board along with Moda, as a sponsor for Dr Carolyn Mazloomi's new project "We Are The Story" with the Textile Center in Minneapolis, in response to the racism that is occurring in our country now. The Black Lives Matter movement is an important moral and humanitarian effort, and this exhibit brings awareness and supports further dialogue on this urgent issue in the US. I have posted an article on the exhibit on our Facebook page, if you'd like to learn more, or visit in person.
Dr Mazloomi is the founder of the Women of Color Quilters' Network. You may recall that I traveled to South Africa in 2014 with this group of mothers and grandmothers, and I experienced the Ferguson shooting and riots through their eyes while on the trip. eQuilter was a sponsor of the quilt festival in Johannesburg, and these quilters had contributed to an exhibit about Nelson Mandela. You can click here to see the quilt exhibit.
Next week I will get to see my mom in person for the first time since March. We will have to sit 8 feet away from each other, and I won't be able to hold her hand or give her a hug, but at least we'll be able to speak freely and not talk over Zoom or a speaker phone. I am going to focus on the positive, and just keep moving forward a week at a time.
with Hope for the Future,
Luana and Paul
