Moon and Stars, Bears and Trees
What a thrill it has been over the last 9 days, to follow the launch, slingshot around the dark side of the Moon, and splashdown of Artemis II. Paul and I were musing about experiencing Moon missions today, and over 50 years ago. When we were kids, the whole world stopped when humans went to the Moon. Do kids feel the same way today? I still feel very emotional about this amazing feat of Humankind, and especially about the words of wisdom the astronauts share with us as they look back at the small blue marble, the Earth spaceship we are traveling on through the vastness of black space.
Ever since I was a kid, I have gone out almost every night to look at the stars. After I met the NASA chapter of Engineers Without Borders, and they showed me how to track the International Space Station across the sky, I have even more reason to go out and take in the celestial heavens at night. (There's an app for that!)
Some of my most memorable trips have been when I was in a dark sky location, and saw the Milky Way strung across the sky. The two times I remember the most was on the Australian coast on a trip with Pam Holland, and the time I got up at 2 am at Bear Camp in Alaska. When you are in a far Northern latitude around midsummer, there is only a short window of time to look at the dark sky. (In midsummer, the days are long and the nights are short.) On that 2nd occasion I was in Lake Clark National Park which is a very remote wild place. There is something about being in the middle of nowhere with the forest, the bears, and the stars....that one never forgets.
In fact I have just finished a big bear quilt inspired by my own face-to-face encounter with a huge mama bear in the forest, on that trip to Lake Clark Bear Camp. I have wondered...what do the bears think when they look up at the Milky Way?
