This little gem of a wallhanging quilt is this week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Pattern, and we have been saving it for this special time of year, knowing that you’ll be wanting a project once the holidays are over!

Families of barn owls, snowy owls, great horned owls and more, gather together in these delightful illustrations. The little ones are so cute with downy feathers and bright, curious eyes.

Detailed blocks from a larger panel, are set into Hoffman hand-dyed attic windows, then sashed and bordered with rustic woodgrains and gorgeous stone textures.

Creative Nudge – Winter Dreams

Untitled-1

* Winter Dreams *

Oh my goodness, we’re just bursting with excitement about all we have planned for you in 2016! In the meantime we’ve been wishing for a really good snow to put us in the mood for Christmas, and today we got 9 inches of snow… Wish granted! Sophie and all the kids in the area were off school for a Snow Day, and our dogs had way too much fun romping and prancing in the snowdrifts.

It has been a very full year for me and our family. My travels took me to New Zealand, Mexico, QuiltCon, Sacred Threads, Quilt National, England, and Cuba. Our son Sam turned 18, graduated from high school, and started college. Sophie got sick from the toxic gases at her school, we moved her to a different school midyear, and I became a parent activist. On top of it all, I officiated at a wedding in Chautauqua Park, where Paul and I got married 20 years ago. Paul lost his dad and his sister, and as our puppies grew into dogs, they gave us great joy and solace.

But you know, that’s the way life goes, right? You have all had the same kind of year no doubt…just full to the brim with changes, challenges, family rites of passages, losses and new beginnings. As I look forward to 2016, I know it will be just as full of those changes and challenges, rollercoasters of emotion, and opportunities that I don’t want to miss. As my 92 year old mother-in-law says…. Life is what happens when you are busy making plans. However that never stopped us from making goals for the future. We are busy mapping out new projects, and intriguing ideas for the coming year. If I don’t make a list of goals and a map for the new year, I tend to settle deeply into the groove of my familiar routine.

How about you? What changes would you like to make for 2016? Creating or upgrading a studio space? Buying a new sewing machine? Taking a class with an artist whose work inspires you? Using a totally different color palette? Entering a piece in a prestigious exhibition? Or perhaps taking a deep breath and working on the meditative practice of Slow Stitching?

This passion for fabric, color and stitching is what brings us joy, and brings us closer to our inner truth. It heals our hearts and minds, and clears away the mental clutter. It connects us to a community of like-minded souls who share themselves by making things for others to enjoy. Occasionally there is chocolate, tea, or even wine to share with these friends, and it feels like we have found our tribe, and come home.

As you head into the busy holiday season, hold a space for that quiet time that comes in the New Year, when we can gather our thoughts and delve into our stash, and pursue our dreams of creative bliss.

sharing your Passion for Fabric…
Luana and Paul

Our Work in Guatemala

You may recall that I was supposed to go to Guatemala a couple weeks ago, but canceled my trip after the surgeons decided to reschedule. However Kathy Price, the director of Mission of Love Foundation, insisted on going as planned.

eQuilter sent a large donation for the end of the year, to help finance this trip. Here is a partial report on what was accomplished by Kathy and Mission of Love on this trip:

Day 7 of our Mission of Love in Guatemala

It’s our last day here in Guatemala. We started our day with breakfast at the hotel. Our first stop was to go to an old age home where there was about 65 elders waiting for our arrival. We brought food bags to hand out to the women and warm blankets to hand out to the men. We were received with such love and appreciation that you could feel the presence of something much bigger than all of us. We physically touched the hands and embraced each one of them. There were introductions and some of the elders spoke on behalf of all of them to express their gratitude. They were having a fiesta with a band and dancing. It was a joy to see everyone laughing and smiling. We couldn’t stay too long because we had other people we need to see before leaving for Guatemala City.

After leaving the old age home we traveled to another community to see a boy named Edwin. He is a 5 year old boy with cerebral palsy that is in critical need of physiotherapy. After going to his community and handing out the rest of the bags of food we took Edwin and his mother to the city to discuss a plan to get this boy help. The parents don’t even have the money to pay for transportation to go to the clinic so it was arranged by Kathy to take care of that necessity. When we first saw Edwin his eyes were almost closed and he was moaning with every breath. I was absolutely amazed when he reached out for Kathy’s hand and when she held his hand he had the biggest smile on his face. His eyes lit up and he seemed to be full of life. The thing is this a five year old boy and Kathy hadn’t seen him for 2 years.

By the time we left the clinic Edwin was laughing and his eyes were big and bright and you could see he wanted to walk and participate in activities. What a transformation within just a couple of hours. We also planned for our upcoming rehabilitation Mission of Love with Doctor Dan Winkle in the spring for the children with cerebral palsy, etc.

We had purchased and handed out 120 bags of food and 120 blankets to those suffering and in need. We had a long drive back to the Hotel and when we got back we had a bite to eat and off to bed.

When you work with Kathy she finds a way to do three weeks of work in one week so the feeling of accomplishment is immense and quite often overwhelming with emotion.

When you participate in this type of mission work sometimes it’s very difficult knowing these people will continue to live with such hardship and we get to go home to our comfortable lives but in order to continue you must realize that your not here to save the world you are here to touch the hands and hearts that are within your reach. I truly understand this now!

Creative Nudge – Mariposas Mi Amigas

Capture

This week I’d just like to bring you some lovely eye candy to make you smile and maybe dream a little.

This is a detail of a quilt from the Houston Quilt Festival’s Group Quilt category. (eQuilter sponsored the prizes in this category.) It was made by Gail Garber, Donna Barnitz, Afton Warrick and Kris Vierra from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

It was made with fused applique and freezer paper foundation piecing. The title means “Butterflies My Friends”. Gail is a quilt artist and teacher, known for these techniques. She also runs a raptor rescue center called Hawks Aloft… talented busy lady!

I’ve set a detail of the quilt, in a collage of favorite butterfly fabrics here at eQuilter.

To the Native Americans, butterflies were symbols of transformation, joy, renewal and rebirth. For the Chinese, they were a symbol of immortality and young love. They can also represent freedom and creativity… so if the Butterfly is your Spirit Animal, perhaps you will be inspired by these collectible large scale panels.

BERNINA Ambassadors & Colors of the Year

I have just returned from the BERNINA Ambassadors’ Reunion at their US headquarters near Chicago, and as always it was a great opportunity to play on some amazing sewing and longarm machines, meet peers from the industry, and network on a variety of topics….i.e. I didn’t get much sleep…ha! I also got the scoop on some hot new products and you see those popping up in the newsletter over the next month or two. When all these brilliant artisans, authors and teachers get together, we get very excited about sharing new tools and fun sewing techniques!

Many thanks to Jeanne and the tireless BERNINA USA staff who planned, hosted and trained us, with their passion for sewing, and generous technical know-how. I am truly honored to be included in this group year after year!

Here are some photos from when I went to Switzerland with the group in 2006. The best part was touring the factory! I was very fortunate to have Libby Lehman as one of my mentors in the group, and we miss her so much. If you subscribe to her Caring Bridge page, you know that she has recently begun to sew again which is a miracle.

You may recall that 3 weeks ago I was at the Color Marketing Group conference in San Diego, and one of the attendees was Lee Eiseman who chooses and announces the Pantone Color of the Year. These days the Color of the Year is chosen way in advance of its announcement, because Pantone partners with companies such as Sephora to create licensed products with this color.

This year for the first time, there are TWO Colors of the Year for 2016, and as usual they are already generating controversy. It is two pastel colors – Rose Quartz is a pastel pink, and Serenity is a pastel blue. A lot of people think they are just Baby Pink and Baby Blue which of course was not Pantone’s intention, but when you view them over the internet I suspect the subtleties of the colors have been lost. Meanwhile Sephora has come out with 2 new lipsticks in these colors. We’ll see if anyone will want to wear a pastel blue lipstick…

I am home for the holidays, and my next trip is not until the week of January 18, when I go to Tokyo for the Quilt Festival there.

* CUBA ARTS TOUR *

Registrations for my fabulous arts tour to Cuba are now OPEN for May 8-15, 2016.

Creative Nudge – People and Colors of Cuba

Untitled-1

Have you seen our 5 new videos from the Houston Quilt Festival? If not, please start with the People & Portraits video, to see the fantastic figurative work being done by fiber artists today.

Portrait art quilts are a popular trend now, and there are many new books out with a variety of different techniques to create stunning detailed portraits.

What comes before the portrait quilt? Often it is a photo that captures a gesture, a moment in time, a flash of personality.

I’d like to share this collage of photos that I took in Cuba, to give you some different ideas about portrait and figurative images. The subject doesn’t always have to be looking the viewer in the eye. Often when their gaze is elsewhere, our eye follows them, and we wonder what has captured their attention.

My trip to Cuba was fascinating, because it is a country frozen in time, and we all had the sense that it will not remain the same for long. I hope my photos here and on my photo pages have given you a sense of this island nation…it is like traveling back in time. If you are intrigued… join us on our May 2016 Cuban Arts Tour!
