Free Pattern – To the Letter Stitch

Untitled-1

Celebrate the art of illuminated letters and flowing script with this Free Quilt Pattern, featuring an ornate Alphabet Calligraphy panel or Decorative Letters panel.

Janet’s vintage font collection is a big hit with fans of Steampunk and Victorian design, and also for those who keep the fine art of handwritten lettering alive!

For a true vintage look, use an old trick from our Grandma’s quilt guild – brew up a big batch of tea and soak the fabric or the quilt to make your own authentic “Tea-Dyed” quilt!

The pattern can be assembled with either panel:
Chalkboard Alphabet
or
Sayings for Sewing

…featuring the ‘Letter Stitch’ collection by J. Wecker Frisch for Quilting Treasures.

You may order the pattern as configured, (click through here to see the specifics!) or customize it to your liking with any of our over 20,000 fabrics. Just place your desired fabrics in your Wish List, and these fabrics will appear in the Fabric Selector below the pattern.

This pattern was designed in EQ7, which is available here at eQuilter.

Quilt Conferences and Quilt Drives

Although eQuilter is a sponsor of Quilters Take Manhattan next weekend, I won’t be able to attend. However I hope those of you in the NYC area can attend this great event at FIT. I went last year and had a blast!

SAQA is having an online fundraiser now, where you can bid on donated art quilts to benefit the organization.

Are you going to Houston for Quilt Festival this year? eQuilter is also a sponsor of a couple exhibits, including the National Parks quilt challenge which celebrates the centennial of the National Parks in the US. I even have a quilt in the exhibit! (Bobcat, in Arches National Park) There is a book in the works for this exhibit, and it will travel after Houston.

Right now I am finishing 2 quilts for the Fly Me To the Moon quilt challenge, which has been a lot of fun due to my association with the Houston NASA chapter of Engineers Without Borders. We’ve supported their project at an orphanage and school in Rwanda for many years, and now they are gearing up for a new project in Kenya.

This week Mission of Love is building a home in Pine Ridge SD, and eQuilter helped to cover the costs of shipping the building supplies up to the reservation. I have recently committed to making another trip to Guatemala with Kathy Price and her team of doctors, for Cleft Lip & Palate surgeries for the poor Mayan children.

We are also continuing to collect quilts for those who lost everything in the earthquake in Nepal. (Thanks to all of you who have sent quilts so far!!!) It looks like we will send more quilts over to Nepal this fall in the suitcases of many volunteers from different relief organizations. Boulder has a huge climbing community with connections to Nepal (and the Sherpa community of Mt Everest) so we are working those connections. The first batch of quilts was already hand-carried over by the founder of Engineers Without Borders, who lives here in Boulder.

Our hearts go out to those affected by the terrible fires in California and the Northwest. If you are aware of the local groups who are gathering and distributing donated quilts there, can you please send us their contact information?

And why am I not going to be in New York next weekend? Because I will be on my way to a cultural exchange trip in Cuba! I really want to go and photograph the island before it is influenced by the homogenizing effects of US culture. I am traveling with my friend who introduced me to the Carters last year, so it will be an interesting trip for sure! I don’t have any quilting contacts there (yet) so I am just hand-carrying sewing supplies and will share them while spending 24 hrs in a private home in a country village.

Free Pattern – Paris and Rome Panorama

This week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Pattern features 2 of the most popular fabrics we’ve ever carried – with a choice of a Paris or Rome digitally printed art panel from Hoffman.

Hang these on the wall and imagine you are gazing out the window of your atelier in Paris (a scene from “Funny Face” or “An American in Paris”), or perhaps from your penthouse patio in Rome with a view of the Colosseum and Saint Peter’s Basilica. (As in the Italian film “La Grande Bellezza” – The Great Beauty)

For the avid world traveler, one of each would make a fantastic holiday gift!

Available as Paris or Rome – which is *your* favorite?

Creative Nudge – Chilly Anticipation

Untitled-1

This weekend, while I was hiding from the 90 degree weather outside, I allowed myself the indulgence of looking at Fall and Winter fabric. There comes that moment at the end of summer when it is still hot, and you are ready for chilly weather. Looking at Autumn fabrics puts me in the mood for cooler days… just like looking at Hawaiian fabric helps me get through the end of Winter in February…you know what I mean?

My other indulgence was to dig through old pictures of the kids in the Pumpkin Patch, wearing their new coats and hats for the upcoming Winter season. Sophie was 4 years old in this photo, and we went out early in the morning to watch the hot air balloons take off.

As every mother and grandmother quilter knows, kids grow up too fast, and if you get distracted, quilts can take too long to make. You can start a baby quilt and next thing you know they are starting college! Sheesh!

However this is the upcoming season for quilting, and I am plumping and fluffing my stash in anticipation.

If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, it is Springtime approaching of course, and I imagine you all are getting in the mood for Floral fabrics! There is something so delicious about pulling out seasonal fabrics in anticipation of the coming change of weather. This time of year I just love those Autumn leaves – Red Maple Leaves outlined in Gold Metallic are my guilty pleasure.

How about you?

As with past quilt drives, we are gathering quilts for Nepal and looking for the best means of delivering your donated quilts before Winter hits. One batch has already been hand-carried and delivered to an aid organization in Kathmandu. They may end up being hand-carried in the suitcases of several aid workers traveling there over the next few months. Our main concern is that we send them over with trusted representatives so they are personally delivered to those in most need. We’ll keep you posted!

Free Pattern – Snoopy the Flying Ace

Snoopy

This adorable Free Quilt Pattern features one of the most beloved comic/cartoon characters of all time – from the Peanuts Comic Strip by Charles M. Schulz.

In this 36″ x 52″ quilt, Snoopy imagines himself as a World War One flying Ace, flying through the sky in his doghouse, re-imagined as a Sopwith Camel airplane. (With his co-pilot Woodstock!)

One of our favorite Snoopy quotes, after a visit to the vet:
“They tortured me, but all I gave them was my name, rank and serial number!”

Did you know?
This British WWI single-seat biplane fighter was first seen on the Western Front in 1917. It was considered notoriously difficult to fly, but had extreme maneuverability. It was a brave canine pilot who stepped into this cockpit!

A Wild Season

We’ve had a few chilly mornings here in Boulder Colorado, even though it is warm or hot during the day, and I find myself unconsciously organizing and nesting, like a squirrel at the end of summer. In fact we have a lot of wildlife in our backyard, our neighborhood, and our foothills…the bears are searching for food already where the mountains meet the city.

I have always been a sharp wildlife spotter, but I think I am even more attuned since my 2 trips to Churchill to photograph the polar bears. Yesterday a bald eagle flew overhead in front of me, and landed next to me across the street. I pulled over and we looked at each other for awhile. Those moments are so magical. I also had a close encounter with a coyote pup this summer, and I felt sad that even though he was just playing and minding his own business, someone might come by and want to cut short his life.

In the next couple weeks the Aspen will turn gold in the high country here, and the Elk rutting season will begin. Our Rocky Mountain National Park is famous for the elk season, where you can spot herds of elk from the road as you drive through the park. Certain areas are known for moose, and mountain residents spot bears and mountain lions often. Deer are plentiful, as are a variety of raptors.

This time of year we see the wildlife often, as they try to fatten up for the winter ahead. So as the leaves turn gold, orange and red, and maybe we are sewing some Halloween projects, I am also enjoying the huge variety of wildlife fabrics that are available these days. The North Woods realistic panels are the most stunning I think, and the scenes of a cabin by a lake, can put us in the mood for a mountain or wilderness vacation.

I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful place, but also to have such a huge variety of forest, lake and wildlife fabric designs to express my love of Nature! How about you?

Next week Mission of Love is building a house for a homeless Lakota grandmother in Pine Ridge, SD. (and undoubtedly 20 members of her family will end up living there) eQuilter has kicked in money to ship building supplies to the Pine Ridge reservation, but they are still short of covering the whole cost. If you’d like to contribute something, you can donate directly on the Mission of Love website. A team of volunteers is traveling there next week, to build the house from scratch in a few days.

Creative Nudge – Zen Abstract

Creative Nudge - Zen Abstract

Last week I was at Quilt National in Athens Ohio, and I am still processing this tight focused art quilt exhibit that some artists consider the Oscars of quilt exhibitions. With only 84 quilts in a very special venue, it is certainly a thrill for any artist whose work is accepted.

This week’s Creative Nudge collage features “Rocky Trail” by Randy Frost, who won this year’s Hilary Morrow Fletcher “Persistence Pays” Award.

Her artist statement says: “Rocky Trail is part of my Journeys series. A journey can be real or imaginary, the distance, any length. Choose any destination…”

Her abstract work of art is a visual metaphor for our creative process, which takes us on a journey with an unknown destination…but the process is the most important part.

Abstract quilts and abstract fabrics are a huge trend now. They are full of painterly textures, dramatic gestures, and rich visual stimulation. As with all art and design trends, they parallel trends in pop culture, mass consciousness, and social metaphors. How do you feel when you gaze at an abstract piece? Does it take you to a Zen meditative place, or do you find yourself looking for a face, a symbol, a recognizable shape?

I love standing in front of abstract pieces in museums and galleries and listening to the comments of viewers as they pass through. When we can just ‘be’ with these pieces, without identifying someone or something, it enables us to go to a deeper level of consciousness.

Making abstract art can take us even deeper. You may still see a face or symbol in the final piece of work, but the abstract process is an exercise in pure consciousness and playful exploration.

Creative Nudge – Light and Dimension

Untitled-1

I am writing to you from the Dairy Barn in Athens Ohio, where today I am lecturing on International Quilt Trends. I have to write this before I go see the Quilt National exhibit, so my comments on the show will have to wait a little bit!

One of the trends I am tracking is the illusion of depth and light through the use of Ombre piecing or Ombre fabrics. When this technique is used with other creative devices such as complementary colors, in this case set off on a neutral (Taupe) background, it really makes the design pop!

This stunning Double Wedding Ring by quiltmaker Joke Spaans-Stolp (Netherlands) uses not only light, midtone and dark shades of each color…but also uses shot cottons in the rings, to add further depth and dimension to what would be an otherwise traditional quilt. This collage above features a detail from the quilt (seen at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK), framed by Ombre fabrics showing the similar effect of light and dimension.

Modern and traditional quilters are exploring the creative boundaries of beloved favorite patterns like the Wedding Ring. Judy Niemeyer’s Wedding Ring patterns have been favorites at eQuilter for years, as have Darlene Zimmerman’s plastic templates for Wedding Ring blocks. Two years ago Victoria Findlay-Wolfe’s Wedding Ring interpretation took best of show at the first QuiltCon in Austin Texas.

For this year’s QuiltCon photos, Sacred Threads, and other quilt exhibit photo galleries, check out my photo pages. Enjoy!

Thanks for supporting our family-owned business, with over $1 million donated to charity. While in Ohio I am meeting with Kathy Price, the director of Mission of Love, so we can plan our next partnership to help those in need….with your support.
