Quilt Therapy

This week I read about another study that supports the idea of Quilting having health benefits. There have been similar studies about Crafting, Knitting, etc. Those of us who quilt and craft have a little giggle about this, because we always knew it was true, but we are glad to have more research to confirm this important justification for all the fabric we collect. Ha!

Besides saturating your brain with Dopamine and Serotonin, working with your hands is a kind of meditation, which allows you to process thoughts and emotions while you work.

With all the choice of colors and designs available to us in quilt fabric these days, we are also engaging in Color Therapy as we work with our collection of fabrics.

Some of us just like to pet our stash. We take it out, fondle and re-organize, and have a calming effect similar to petting our dog or cat.

My friend Mark Lipinski is onto something, with his Slow Stitching movement. He advocates an approach which helps you to be in the moment and experience all the little joyful details which is more about the process, than the end result.

I also wanted to share with you this lovely tribute article that Linda Teufel wrote for her mentor Koos Van Den Akker, which originally appeared in Threads Magazine. Be sure to scroll down and watch the video of Koos in his studio. If you don't mind a little salty language, you will really get a kick out of this inside view of a creative genius in his space.

New York City fashion designer Koos van den Akker passed away at 75 on February 3, 2015.

This weekend Sophie is taking Pattern Camp with Boulder-bred young designer Jessica Swift. I spent a day with Jessica last September at the Art Makers conference in Denver, and you can get in on it this year too!
